Pursuant to the decision of the Government of Nepal to extend humanitarian assistance to the victims of the devastating flood in 2011 in Thailand, Mr. Dornath Aryal, Charge d' Affaires a.i. today handed over, a cheque of US $ 25,000 (twenty five thousand US dollar) to H .E. Jullapong Nonsrichai, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at a function organized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
While handing over the cheque, Mr. Aryal extended heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the Government and the people of Thailand for the loss of valuable lives and destruction of colossal property caused by devastating flood. He also extended best wishes for early reconstruction and rehabilitation.
On the occasion, H. E. the Vice Minister expressed sincere thanks and gratitude to the Government of Nepal and expressed confidence that our friendly relations would be further straightened in the days ahead.

Hon. Mr. Deependra Bahadur Kshetry, Vice Chairperson, National Planning Commission and the Leader of the Nepalese Delegation to the 68th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (UN-ESCAP) delivered a country statement today in Bangkok. The 68th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is being held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok from 17 to 23 May 2012.
The Commission session comprises two parts: the Senior Officials segment, from 17 to 19 May 2012 and the Ministerial Segment from 21 to 23 May 2012. The Senior Officials segment, held from 17 to 19 May, was led by Mr. Yuba Raj Bhusal, Member- Secretary of National Planning Commission.
While delivering the country statement, Hon'ble Vice Chairperson said that in the ESCAP region many least developed and landlocked countries are facing the problems of poverty, high unemployment, inequality, and social exclusion. He also brought into light that the volatility and uncertainty of the global economy has posed serious threat to the most marginalized and poor people in Asia and the Pacific region. He also highlighted that because of climate change, glaciers in the Himalayas have become prone to melt down faster and hence posing serious threat to the livelihood of the people and ecology of the entire region.
While delivering country statement the Vice Chairman said that the Himalayan Mountains being disproportionately affected by climate change, Nepal had put forward the idea of Mountain Initiative at the 15th Session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Copenhagen in December 2009 and in view of that, an International Conference on Green Economy and International Conference of Mountain Countries were organized in Kathmandu in September 2011 and in April 2012 respectively.
He also highlighted that Nepal has been implementing pro-poor social protection programs including pension for senior citizens from the section of Dalit, ethnic minorities, and the people living in remote areas above the age of 60 and to all other elderly persons above 75, and to the widows from the very first day of her widowhood, and life-long pension to the differently abled persons.
He underlined that the Istanbul Program of Action was a significant step forward for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and the Istanbul Conference on LDCs had renewed a hope to effectively implement the Program of Action to bring about qualitative change in the lives of millions of people.
He also urged the Development partners, UN Agencies, Multi-lateral organizations, Parliamentarians, the Private sectors, Civil Society and other stakeholders to play their respective roles in more constructive ways so as to make at least half of the LDCs could graduate by the year 2020.
Shedding light on Nepal's peace process, he expressed confidence that the promulgation of new constitution would help fostering peace and stability and achieving development goals in Nepal.
